SPQR and USA

Today in class we talked about the relationship between Rome's government and the United States' government. Both of the Countries had three branches of government- Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. For the Romans in the Executive branch they had...
-two consuls
-each consul had a one year term
- both consuls had veto power
-both controlled the military
-and both could be appointed to dictator in times of crisis

-Senate- 300 members
-members were aristocrats and had life long terms
Assemblies- members for life

-Praetors
-chosen by the centurait assembly
-one year terms
dealt with all problems

For set of laws the Romans had the Twelve tables
-Publicly displayed
-gave rights to plebs. not just aristocrats
-only protected free born male citizens

For the Americans in the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches we have...
-A president and a vice president
-both have four year term
- the president can veto proposed laws
- the president is the Commander in Chief

-Senate- 100 senators two from every state
-senators had six year terms
-House of Reps.-435 members
- the bigger or smaller the state the more or less reps. a state had.
-reps. had two year terms

-Supreme Court
-nine members
-appointed by the president, confirmed by the senate
-supreme court members had life time terms

For set of laws America had the bill of rights
-the first ten amendments of the constitution
