Ancient Egypt test

Today in West Civ we took the Ancient Egypt test. I didn't think that I did too well on it compared to my other quizzes. I didn't really know all of the information from the pyramid game and there were some questions on it so I think I got those questions wrong. I also forgot some facts on the years and the length of the Nile. After grading the test Mr. Schick showed everyone their test. I got an 85%.

Pyramid game

Today in West Civ we played a game where you make a pyramid. You had to choose gods to pray to to make sure that you are blessed before making the pyramid. You had to choose your amount of work force, how you feed your work force and how you reward them. You had to choose where you make the pyramid, what material to make, and the degree that the pyramid is made at. Mr. Schick made it a game so people would go in pairs and then the first two groups that finish get an A, and the second two groups to finish would get a B. If you get finished in class you get a C and if you don't finish they would receive a 0. My partner, Jake, finished forth so we both got B's. I thought this was by far the best West Civ we had ever.

Ancient Egypt videos

In 802 AD Al Muumuu wanted to find the treasure of the Pharaoh to discover the secret of the weapon that does not rust from blood and water and the glass that bends and does not break. The pyramid at the time was covered with smooth stones On the pyramid there was a stone that could have been lifted and it would have opened a passage that would lead to the grave. Al muumuu did not want to try to find the stone so he ordered his men to make a tunnel in the side of the pyramid. They found no treasure and they found the pharaohs coffin with no lid on it. They wondered why there was so many passages in the pyramid, because it was only used as a tomb. There were multiple rooms discovered, the kings chamber, queens chamber, subterranean channel, and the grotto.
For mummification, they usually take out all the organs except for the heart. After doing this they cover the body with salt to get rid of the moisture. Than they cover the body with perfumes and oils. Then resin are put on the body to have the wrappings stick to the body. Then another layer is put on the person. Then a mummified bird is place on the body along with a religious sac. Then more wrappings are put on the mummy. then a portrait is placed on the body along with paintings of Egyptian symbols are painted on the body.
The pyramids are one of the last standing ancient wonders of the world.
Ancient Egypt lasted from 3000 BCE to 332 BCE.
The Nile was one of the safest ad richest agricultural places in the world.
Egyptians used basin irrigation to grow crops in ancient Egypt.
Three are three broad categories Old kingdom, Middle kingdom, New kingdom.
Pyramids were made during the Old kingdom.
Pharaohs were seen as gods, because of this they had to act like a god

Egyptian breakthroughs/inventions

1. The sun dial- Egyptian astronomers used sun dials to tell the time during the day. This lead on to the invention the shadow clock which may have been the first portable timepiece. The sun dial was important because people used it to track days and time.

2.Hieroglyphics-Egyptian made hieroglyphics as a system of writing using symbols. This was important because it was the Egyptians way of keeping records and connecting with the Gods when drawing scenes of the after life.

3.Ox drawn plows-Egyptians made plows that would connect to oxen to farm large areas quicker and for a long period of time. This made it so the farmers could plant more crops and they could produce more food making it an important invention.

4.The Calender-Egyptians used the solar system to make their calender, which is the modern calender that we use today. Egyptians also made the leap year calender, adding one day every four years, which we also is today. this system was important because they new when to plant crops and when the Nile would flood, allowing the civilization to grow.

5.Black ink- Egyptians made black ink to be able to keep data on papyrus. They used ink for drawing hieroglyphics. This was important because black ink was used for a long period of time in history to write down information.

I will make sure now on all my future test that i put the honor code on so that I don't have points taken off. For the rest of the class we went over the more of the prezi on Egypt. Most of the information that we wrote today was on my blog already from yesterdays cyber day assignment.

GGS Test

Today we had a test on the Guns, Germs, and Steel video. I understood most of the material and I think that I did really good on it. I think that it was a pretty fair test. The test was multiple choice so it was an easy test. We also had our first test handed back to us and i got a 100% on it. We reviewed over the test and talked about how the information would end up being on the final exam.

Guns, germs, and steel wrap up

Yesterday in class we finished watching the GGS video. We reviewed over the upcoming test and thought of questions that we should have on the test. We talked about how there was no wheat, corn, or cows native in america and how there is a large number of wheat, corn, and cows now in america. We also talked about how Jared diamond thinks geography is the answer to the success in the middle east. We are going to have a test on this material on Monday.

Guns, Germs, and Steel part 3

The people in the middle east received a head start from animals in the area. People figured how to make plaster and how to weave. The people may have observed the plaster being made and then they could have done trial and error. There was a kick start from learning how to use fire to make things from bronze, iron, and steel. After the middle east dried out and became uninhabitable people moved east and west along the latitude lines, because of this people were able to keep their way of farming and living in the special climate of the areas.

Guns, Germs, and Steel part 2

After growth in middle east, China grew crops such as rice. In America corn squash and beans were grown, in Africa sorghum, yams, and millet are grown. These are all nutritious, can be made, and be turned into multiple types of foods, also all the items can make a stock pile.
All places where food can be stored, started with great civilizations. In New Guinea, people have been using farming techniques such as in the middle east 10,000 years ago. The new guineans eat spider to receive protein because they mostly eat and grow sago trees, taro roots, and bananas. If you had the most productive plants you had the most productive farmers,it all just comes down to geological features.

Guns, Germs, and Steel

Jared Diamond, a bird watcher, wrote a book called Guns Germs and Steel which is about how different parts of the world became more advanced than other parts. Jared diamond was in Papua new guinea, a remote island, where the native live in what seems like the stone age. One day a native asked Diamond "why do you have so much cargo and I don't. Diamond did not know the answer so he tried to find the answer.
New guinea is a very unpolluted environment.New Guineans think that white people are smarter and genetically more intelligent. Something important that Jared diamond said was " all great civilizations have had some things in common
-Advanced technology
-Large populations
-a well organized work force
In new guinea people mostly have two jobs hunting and gathering. the gatherers collect a food called wild sago, which is found in the middle of sago trees. This wild sago is an important source of food in new guinea.
Barely and wheat were an essential part of the rise in civilization in the middle east. Draa- the found remains of complex, oldest permanent settlement people lived in.
Granary- the worlds first form of containing food
domestication_- plant cultivation where people were selective about grains.
