Since most of the roman farmers were out fighting the war the only people who tended the farm land were the wives of the farmers. Since they didnt know how to do this, the rich would buy the land and make the farmers wive pay rent for where they lived. When the soldiers came home they would want to move to rome to get a better job with a better pay. But most of Rome was filled with slaves and other people looking for work.

Greek people and philosophers
Greeks were warlike people. Spartans were trained at the age of seven to become soldiers. Athenians had a great infantry but nothing could compare to the their navy. The Trireme was one of the greatest weapons of its time, it was the fastest ship and it could be used as a battering ram. Phalanx-close rank, dense grouping of warriors, they were armed with long spears and shields.
The three great philosophers in Greece were Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates looked to science and logic in the world. The Socratic method fostered critical thinking and got people to think for themselves. Plato was a student of Socrates, he wrote two books the Apology and the Republic. The Apology was about Socrates' trial and the Republic was about what he thought government should be like. The Apology was and still is one of the most influential book in the world. Aristotle was one of Plato's students, he had his own school. This school was called the Lyceum, this was a place were information from all over the world and the information could be discussed. Technically Aristotle created the idea of the internet, because it was a place to find information.

Democracy and the Gods
After Hippias, two aristocrats, Isagoras and Cleisthenes, ran to take power of the government. Isagoras became the tyrant, and after he came to power he ostracized cleisthenes. The Greeks did not like the way Isagoras was controlling the government so they revolted against his power. This was the first time in history when regular people joined together to revolt against the government. This occurred in 508 BCE and after they threw Isagoras out and brought back Cleisthenes into the government. After being brought back, Cleisthenes decided to give government power to the people. This created lead to the creating of democracy where everyone who was a citizen had a vote/part in government. Greek Gods and Goddesses, in their mythology, had interactions with humans. Most Gods and Goddesses had some sort of connection to Zeus, The ruler of heaven and earth. The Gods were the gods of normal things such as Zeus- the God of the sky and thunder, Aphrodite- the Goddess of love and beauty, or Apollo- the God of music and arts.

3 Forms of Government in Greece
Aristocracy- Ruled by the aristocrats. The aristocrats ran city states such as Sparta, Athens, etc.
Symposiums were meetings where aristocrats would about government and politics and at these meetings they would have entertainment. The entertainment would be watching acrobats and dancers and drinking wine(a lot of wine). This was an Exclusive club, no women, people from the middle class, no slaves, and sometimes even some aristocrats when they were falling out of favor. These aristocrats would be ostracized from the symposiums. when they were forced outside they would from alliances with hoplites (elite and well trained soldiers) and they would create a tyranny. A Tyrant ruled outside of the government and would seize power.
Hippias- a tyrant who ruled from 527-510 BCE. When his brother was murdered he became a harsh ruler. When he found who killed his brother, he killed them and everyone connected to them. He was then ostracized from Athens (This punishment was considered worst than death). After this he formed an alliance with the Persians and told them about was to attack Athens.

Greek notes
Today Mr. Schick was at the playoffs for academic team so our assignment was to take notes on the new slides of the Greece is the word power point. During the seventh and sixth centuries BCE the aristocrats controlled most of the government in Greece. the rich people held most power in society and this relates to many other governments such as ancient Egypt where the white kilt class held most of the power. Aristocrats would have parties where they would talk about government and have forms of entertainment such as drinking wine, reading poetry, and watching acrobatics. No women or people from the middle class were allowed at these events unless they were entertainers. Aristocrats would sometimes form alliances with hoplites (well-armed soldiers) and make a tyranny. a tyrant is someone who rules outside the framework of the polis. Tyrants are abusive rulers who seize power in government.

Facts on Greece
The Greeks were very good traders because they were skilled sailors. They traded grapes olives and grains with people who lived in/near the Mediterranean sea. In Greece there was not really anywhere to grow a lot of types of food except for grapes, olives, and grains. Olives were very essential because they could be made into many things such as soaps and oil. Also they only grown in Greece and Rome, but Greece was better at transporting and trading their olives. The temperature in Greece was usually a high of 80's in the summer and a low of 40's in the winter
The Mycenaeans, Around 2000 BCE they influenced what was going on in Greece and made a 20 foot thick wall around the city-state. The Myceneans ruled over Greece with kings from 1600 BCE to 1200 BCE. Once they invaded the Dorians they mixed their cultures and languages. These people were constantly invaded by the "sea people" and the sea people would burn everything. There is not a lot of information on these people because they did not write down anything for a long period of time. This period of time was called the "Greek Dark Ages" During this time a blind story teller composed stories about the Trojan War. Homer wrote stories like Iliad which is about the last conquest of the Myceneans. The Odyssey was a story about a man trying to get back home and his journey is thwarted by Posiden. There is a theory that homer didn't even exist and that the stories were just multiple people making it up together. This theory is called "Homeric question"

Cyber day and the future
Today in West Civ we talked about how we would not really have school tomorrow and that we would have a cyber day. Mr. Schick also said that there was a good chance that we wouldn't have school on Friday along with Thursday. Mr. Schick saw cyber days as a time were everyone in class does a big video chat and it would be like having class online. After talking about how cyber days are we talked about how technology has progressed. We talked about a man who had a heart monitor in his heart and how if his heart had problems a message would be sent to his doctor and he would deal with the problem. We continued talking about this subject and then class ended. I thought it was a pretty interesting class.

Ancient Greece
Most of the great civilizations of the world were located near rivers such as Mesopotamia located near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers or Egypt located around the Nile river. But in Ancient Greece's case, This civilization was surrounded by the Mediterranean sea, the Ionian sea, and the Aegean sea. Also Ancient Greece's land seems to be elevated meaning it was a very rocky land with mountains towards the center of the country. Since Greece has this type of geography the civilization could have been very isolated from the rest of the world. This can affect there culture by allowing the Greeks to have one official religion of Greece and to have there own government system. These factors of Greece can go unaffected from the rest of the world. There is a large island south of Greece called Crete. Athens was located near the sea, and Sparta was located in an area surrounded by mountains and it had a river going through it.

Ancient Egypt test
Today in West Civ we took the Ancient Egypt test. I didn't think that I did too well on it compared to my other quizzes. I didn't really know all of the information from the pyramid game and there were some questions on it so I think I got those questions wrong. I also forgot some facts on the years and the length of the Nile. After grading the test Mr. Schick showed everyone their test. I got an 85%.

Egyptian astronomers made a calender with 365 days and 12 months that worked with he seasonal cycles
Egyptians also had great knowledge on human anatomy and doctors knew how to make potions and cures for people.
Egyptians created the sail boat allowing them to increase transportation through the Nile.
Pyramids we re massive stone tombs originally covered with white marble and they are still standing today.

Pyramid game
Today in West Civ we played a game where you make a pyramid. You had to choose gods to pray to to make sure that you are blessed before making the pyramid. You had to choose your amount of work force, how you feed your work force and how you reward them. You had to choose where you make the pyramid, what material to make, and the degree that the pyramid is made at. Mr. Schick made it a game so people would go in pairs and then the first two groups that finish get an A, and the second two groups to finish would get a B. If you get finished in class you get a C and if you don't finish they would receive a 0. My partner, Jake, finished forth so we both got B's. I thought this was by far the best West Civ we had ever.

Ancient Egypt videos
In 802 AD Al Muumuu wanted to find the treasure of the Pharaoh to discover the secret of the weapon that does not rust from blood and water and the glass that bends and does not break. The pyramid at the time was covered with smooth stones On the pyramid there was a stone that could have been lifted and it would have opened a passage that would lead to the grave. Al muumuu did not want to try to find the stone so he ordered his men to make a tunnel in the side of the pyramid. They found no treasure and they found the pharaohs coffin with no lid on it. They wondered why there was so many passages in the pyramid, because it was only used as a tomb. There were multiple rooms discovered, the kings chamber, queens chamber, subterranean channel, and the grotto.
For mummification, they usually take out all the organs except for the heart. After doing this they cover the body with salt to get rid of the moisture. Than they cover the body with perfumes and oils. Then resin are put on the body to have the wrappings stick to the body. Then another layer is put on the person. Then a mummified bird is place on the body along with a religious sac. Then more wrappings are put on the mummy. then a portrait is placed on the body along with paintings of Egyptian symbols are painted on the body.

Egyptian breakthroughs/inventions
1. The sun dial- Egyptian astronomers used sun dials to tell the time during the day. This lead on to the invention the shadow clock which may have been the first portable timepiece. The sun dial was important because people used it to track days and time.
2.Hieroglyphics-Egyptian made hieroglyphics as a system of writing using symbols. This was important because it was the Egyptians way of keeping records and connecting with the Gods when drawing scenes of the after life.
3.Ox drawn plows-Egyptians made plows that would connect to oxen to farm large areas quicker and for a long period of time. This made it so the farmers could plant more crops and they could produce more food making it an important invention.
4.The Calender-Egyptians used the solar system to make their calender, which is the modern calender that we use today. Egyptians also made the leap year calender, adding one day every four years, which we also is today. this system was important because they new when to plant crops and when the Nile would flood, allowing the civilization to grow.
5.Black ink- Egyptians made black ink to be able to keep data on papyrus. They used ink for drawing hieroglyphics. This was important because black ink was used for a long period of time in history to write down information.

Today in West Civ we received our Guns, Germs, and Steel test back. I received a 97 because I answered all the questions right but I forgot to put the honor code on my scan tron. I will make sure now on all my future test that i put the honor code on so that I don't have points taken off. For the rest of the class we went over the more of the prezi on Egypt. Most of the information that we wrote today was on my blog already from yesterdays cyber day assignment.

- The Nile is the biggest river in the world
*Water is essential
-Drinking
-Bathing
-Irrigating
-Transportation
- Sail boats are used to go down stream.
-Every July the Nile floods
-Every October it leaves behind rich soil/silt
-The Nile ends a delta; a broad marshy, triangular area of fertile silt
-Managing the river required technological breakthroughs in irrigation

GGS Test
Today we had a test on the Guns, Germs, and Steel video. I understood most of the material and I think that I did really good on it. I think that it was a pretty fair test. The test was multiple choice so it was an easy test. We also had our first test handed back to us and i got a 100% on it. We reviewed over the test and talked about how the information would end up being on the final exam.

Guns, germs, and steel wrap up
Yesterday in class we finished watching the GGS video. We reviewed over the upcoming test and thought of questions that we should have on the test. We talked about how there was no wheat, corn, or cows native in america and how there is a large number of wheat, corn, and cows now in america. We also talked about how Jared diamond thinks geography is the answer to the success in the middle east. We are going to have a test on this material on Monday.

Guns, Germs, and Steel part 3
The people in the middle east received a head start from animals in the area. People figured how to make plaster and how to weave. The people may have observed the plaster being made and then they could have done trial and error. There was a kick start from learning how to use fire to make things from bronze, iron, and steel. After the middle east dried out and became uninhabitable people moved east and west along the latitude lines, because of this people were able to keep their way of farming and living in the special climate of the areas.

Guns, Germs, and Steel part 2
After growth in middle east, China grew crops such as rice. In America corn squash and beans were grown, in Africa sorghum, yams, and millet are grown. These are all nutritious, can be made, and be turned into multiple types of foods, also all the items can make a stock pile.
All places where food can be stored, started with great civilizations. In New Guinea, people have been using farming techniques such as in the middle east 10,000 years ago. The new guineans eat spider to receive protein because they mostly eat and grow sago trees, taro roots, and bananas. If you had the most productive plants you had the most productive farmers,it all just comes down to geological features.

Guns, Germs, and Steel
Jared Diamond, a bird watcher, wrote a book called Guns Germs and Steel which is about how different parts of the world became more advanced than other parts. Jared diamond was in Papua new guinea, a remote island, where the native live in what seems like the stone age. One day a native asked Diamond "why do you have so much cargo and I don't. Diamond did not know the answer so he tried to find the answer.
New guinea is a very unpolluted environment.New Guineans think that white people are smarter and genetically more intelligent. Something important that Jared diamond said was " all great civilizations have had some things in common
-Advanced technology
-Large populations
-a well organized work force
In new guinea people mostly have two jobs hunting and gathering. the gatherers collect a food called wild sago, which is found in the middle of sago trees. This wild sago is an important source of food in new guinea.
Barely and wheat were an essential part of the rise in civilization in the middle east. Draa- the found remains of complex, oldest permanent settlement people lived in.
Granary- the worlds first form of containing food
domestication_- plant cultivation where people were selective about grains.

Test
Today we had a Test in West Civ. The test was on prehistory to Mesopotamia. I think that I did really good on the test. We were allowed to use our blog so the test was easy for us. I knew most of the content so the test was pretty fair. I think that my blog had a lot of information and it was useful for the test.

Review
Today we reviewed over the test that we will have on Friday. The test is on prehistory to Mesopotamia. In class we went over the power point and Mr. Schick talked about his pet peeves were.his pet peeves were when someone offers to open the door and then they stand in the door way and when you thank someone for something and they say no problem. After talking about pet peeves we reviewed over the power point and talked about what we would need to know for the quiz.
We talked about how Mesopotamia was a land that was a very fertile area with two rivers going through it, then after over planting and climate change the area has become very dry and hot environment where nothing can be grown. We also talked about Hammurabi and how he made a law system to keep the city in order.

What made the rise of civilization possible? The rise of civilization was possible by the growth of humans finding a way to make things easier such as making shelter.
Name some early technological innovations. The spear, the knife, the plow, and the wheel.
How did hunter/gatherers live? The hunters would go out and hunt for animals such as rabbits and deer to eat for food. The gatherers would find food like berries and other fruits.
Facts

First Day
Today was the first day of West Civ. Today we set up our new West Civ blogs. Along with the blogs we went over how classes would go and what we would use for class. Mr. Schick told the class that we would have to blog every night that we had class except for Friday. Most of the class procedures seemed the same as in Human Geo.After making our blogs we had to send Mr. Schick the URL of the blog. There was a lot of new students in my class so I wonder how this semester will go.
